Hibi Sandalwood Regular Box

Incense

The story of Hibi begins with two ancient crafts in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan: incense from Awaji Island and matches from Harima. These two traditional crafts met for the first time in 2011. The collaboration started with the idea of an incense that could be lit like a match, leading to three years of experimentation.

Due to the delicate nature of Japanese incense, an ingenious solution was required. A precise blend of incense and washi pulp was developed: a fragrant product that is durable and aromatic, and resistant to breaking when lit like a match.

Instructions

Hibi incense sticks are fragile, so handle them carefully so they don't break when lit.

1. Remove the packaging by tearing the film open from left to right along the perforated edge.

2. Light the Hibi stick by pressing the top tip against the rough brown surface on the side of the box marked for lighting. Light it by scratching it downwards at a 45 degree angle, holding the stick by its centre to prevent breaking.

3. After lighting, tilt the match slightly downwards instead of holding it horizontally, and continue to hold it until the flame spreads to the incense part and then settles down on its own. Extinguishing the flame too quickly may prevent the fire from reaching the incense part, or the appropriate smell may affect the fragrance of the incense, as the combustible material at the end of the match may not be completely burnt.

4. Place the stick on the tray and enjoy the scent for about 10 minutes. The tray is heat-resistant, so you can place it on a table.

5. Do not leave the area unattended until the stick has completely burned out. Burning more than two sticks at a time can be dangerous and may cause the base to overheat, so make sure you only burn one stick at a time.
