Maija Isola created the Unikko pattern, an international icon of pattern design, in 1964. Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia believed that it was impossible to capture the true essence of flowers in a pattern. For this reason, flowers were not previously included in Marimekko's collections. Maija Isola designed the Unikko pattern more as an abstract interpretation than a photorealistic rendition of the floral theme. Today, Unikko is a strong symbol of joy and creativity, and an important part of Marimekko's design identity.
